Marriage Problems?
What is stopping your marriage from getting better? Finances? Work schedule? Intimacy? Kids?
These all might play a part in why a marriage is struggling, but there is one factor that must be dealt with first.
Forgiveness is often the root cause of most problems that couples face. It will be impossible to restore a marriage when one or both partners are unwilling to forgive. A lack of forgiveness is a poison that will destroy any relationship.
Forgiveness needs to work both ways. Until each spouse is willing to ask forgiveness, and to offer true forgiveness, a couple will never find the unity in marriage they are seeking. When forgiveness has been dealt with, a struggling couple can move on to
Understanding their responsibilities. In Ephesians 5, God explains the responsibility each spouse has in a marriage relationship. Before He addresses marriage, He gives two general principles that must be settled. First, He says, "Wherefore be ye not unwise,... but be filled with the Spirit." (Eph. 5:17-18) Each spouse will need a godly wisdom before they can find a resolve to marriage problems. Second, He instructs, "Submitting yourselves one to another in the fear of God." (Eph. 5:21) Each spouse will need a humble spirit to yield to the needs of the other. It is not God's design that the husband be a dictator and the wife be a door mat.
"Husbands, love your wives..." (Eph. 5:25) is God's expectation of the husband's responsibility in the relationship. The verse goes on to say, "...even as Christ also loved the church, and gave himself for it;". The same love that made Jesus willing to go to the cross is the love that every husband must have toward his wife.
"...Let... the wife see that she reverence her husband." (Eph. 5:33) is God's expectation of the wife's responsibility in the relationship. In the same way that the church should yield to God's will, the wife is to respect the will of her husband.
There is give and take on both sides to make a marriage work. Both husband and wife need to realize they need help to fulfill the responsibilities God has given them.
